Overview
A cutting-edge cross-border payment platform enabling seamless international money transfers across Africa, providing fast, secure, and affordable remittance services for individuals and businesses.
The Problem
Cross-border payments in Africa were plagued by high fees, slow processing times (3-7 days), poor exchange rates, limited accessibility, and complex regulatory compliance. Individuals sending money home to family members and businesses conducting international trade faced significant barriers. Traditional banks and money transfer operators charged exorbitant fees (often 8-15% of transaction value) and offered poor transparency. African diaspora communities and businesses needed a modern, affordable, and reliable way to send and receive money across African borders.
My Approach
As part of the development team, I contributed to building a comprehensive fintech platform using modern web technologies. Worked on implementing key features including: user authentication and KYC (Know Your Customer) verification flow using biometric and document validation, real-time currency conversion with competitive exchange rates pulled from multiple sources, multi-currency wallet system supporting major African currencies (NGN, GHS, KES, ZAR, etc.), instant peer-to-peer transfers within the platform and bank transfers to recipient accounts, transaction history and receipts with detailed breakdowns, compliance features ensuring adherence to financial regulations across multiple African countries, and secure payment processing with multiple fraud detection layers. Contributed to the frontend development using React and TypeScript, ensuring responsive design for mobile and desktop users. Implemented real-time transaction status updates using WebSockets. Worked with the backend team to integrate payment gateways and banking APIs. Helped optimize the platform for low-bandwidth environments common in many African regions. Participated in security audits and implemented best practices for handling sensitive financial data.
The Result
Successfully contributed to the launch of BorderPay Africa, a platform now serving thousands of users across multiple African countries. The platform significantly reduced cross-border transfer costs to an average of 2-3% compared to traditional 8-15% fees. Transfer times decreased from 3-7 days to near-instant or same-day delivery. Supported transactions in 10+ African currencies with transparent, competitive exchange rates. Platform achieved 99.95% uptime and processed millions in transaction volume. Users praised the intuitive interface, fast transfers, and cost savings. The platform helped African diaspora communities send money home more affordably and enabled small businesses to conduct international trade with reduced friction. Security features maintained zero successful fraud incidents. BorderPay Africa positioned itself as a leading player in the African fintech space, contributing to financial inclusion and economic growth across the continent.
