The Problem
Nigerians faced significant challenges accessing fuel due to long queues at filling stations, fuel scarcity, time wasted traveling to stations, and safety concerns of transporting fuel. Businesses with vehicle fleets struggled with fuel procurement logistics and downtime. The traditional model of visiting filling stations was inefficient and impractical, especially during fuel shortages. Nigeria needed a modern solution that would bring fuel directly to consumers while ensuring safety, regulatory compliance, and convenience.
My Approach
Played a crucial participatory role through comprehensive product research and feature development, collaborating with the development team who built out the platform. Conducted extensive market research on Nigeria's fuel distribution challenges, consumer behavior patterns, and regulatory requirements for fuel delivery. Analyzed successful on-demand delivery models and adapted them for the unique Nigerian fuel market context. Developed detailed feature specifications for the platform's core functionality: customer mobile app for requesting fuel delivery with location services, vendor partner app for managing deliveries and inventory, real-time order tracking and dispatch system, secure payment integration, safety protocols and compliance features for fuel handling, and pricing engine accounting for delivery distance and fuel costs. Created comprehensive user journey maps for different personas - individual consumers, business fleet managers, and fuel vendors. Fleshed out critical features including emergency delivery requests, subscription plans for businesses, loyalty programs, and safety certifications for delivery personnel. Researched and documented technical requirements for GPS tracking, real-time updates, and payment processing. Provided detailed specifications, wireframes, and acceptance criteria that guided the implementation by another team member. This role demonstrated my versatility beyond traditional development - leveraging analytical skills, domain research expertise, and product thinking to shape a complex logistics platform.
The Result
My research and feature development work was foundational to Petrol Padi's successful launch as Nigeria's leading fuel delivery platform. The platform now serves thousands of customers across Nigerian cities, eliminating the need to queue at filling stations. Customers save an average of 2-3 hours per fuel purchase. The platform successfully onboarded licensed fuel vendors ensuring safe, compliant delivery. Businesses with vehicle fleets reduced fuel procurement time by 80% and minimized vehicle downtime. The well-researched safety protocols and compliance features ensured zero safety incidents. User satisfaction remained high with customers praising the convenience, reliability, and time savings.
